3rd MOUNTAIN WARFARE CONGRESS
We are pleased to inform you that it has been confirmed that the third Mountain Warfare Congress “Personnel recovery”, will be held!
The entire community of interest (COI) is invited to participate in this NATO MW COE Diamond Event which will be held between 5 – 8 October 2021.
According to the general task of a COE given by MCM-236-03: […] a COE offers recognized expertise and experience within a defined subject matter area to the benefit of the Alliance […]. As one format of doing this, the NATO MW COE created in 2017 a concept to conduct an annual NATO Mountain Warfare Congress by picking up a special theme of Mountain Warfare and providing the Community of Interest with knowledge and experiencies at level of recognized scientists and figure heads in real life experience. The topic of the 3rd NATO Mountain Warfare congress will be “Joint Personnel Recovery in Mountainous Terrain”.
Personnel Recovery is one of the vital missions of the military, so it must be a high-interest area for leaders, planners and decision-makers. Personnel recovery stems commitment to “leave no one behind” and is the sum of military, diplomatic and civil efforts to prepare for and execute the recovery and reintegration of isolated personnel. To put it straight, Personnel Recovery is not a mission expected to be given on a frequent basis, but when it is given, it’s a »no-fail’ mission«. Thus every decision maker for operations and/or missions in mountainous terrain must take his/her responsibility serious, by taking this topic into his considerations. At this Congress a total of 12 Speaker from different contries will highlight the topic from different point of views.
The ensemble of speakers ranges from scientists to experts in MEDEVAC, CASEVAC and JOINT PERSONNEL RECOVERY in difficult, extreme terrain and circumstances. They will share their knowledge and expieriences. Real life cases will be presented from cave rescue in mountainous terrain to military personnel recovery in land operations and body recovery from extreme altitude as well as to recovery planning at the race to the South Pole. All the speakers provide first–hand knowledge. The will not talk about issues which they read in a book, “they are the book!” Additional to the keynotes will be a field trip presentation in recovery techniques out of gorges. An industry day will povide insights in newest technological developments.

The Congress is open for the whole community of interest and you can register either online or via Email. It will take place form 5- 8 October 2021 in Poljče at the NATO MW COE.
