Visit of Italian Ambassador Giuseppe Cavagna: shaping the Future of Mountain Combat.

His Excellency Giuseppe Cavagna, the Italian Ambassador in Slovenia, visit the NATO Mountain Warfare Centre of Excellence (NATO MW COE). This visit  aimed at strengthening ties between Italy and Slovenia, while also showcasing Italy’s commitment to international defense collaborations. The Centre, renowned for its expertise in mountain warfare, provided a fitting backdrop for discussions on the future of military operations in such challenging environments.

During the visit, our team presented the strategic plan that will guide the NATO MWCOE through to 2030. This comprehensive plan envisions a significant transformation in how future combat operations are conducted in mountainous terrains. At its core, this strategy is driven by the need to adapt to rapidly changing warfare dynamics and the increasingly complex nature of modern conflicts. Our vision emphasizes innovation, agility, and resilience in the face of new threats and evolving technologies.

A major focus of the 2030 plan is the shift towards digitalization. The NATO  MWCOE is leveraging state-of-the-art technologies to enhance operational efficiency, situational awareness, and decision-making processes. By incorporating artificial intelligence, advanced communication systems, and cutting-edge training simulations, we are paving the way to excel in mountainous environments where traditional warfare is evolving at an unprecedented pace. However, in this transition to the digital age, we are not discarding the lessons of the past. On the contrary, we are merging the invaluable experience gained from decades of mountain combat with the latest technological advancements. This balanced approach ensures that the skills and wisdom honed over time are enhanced, not replaced, by modern innovation.

As we look towards the future, collaboration with both the defense and civilian industries will be key. The NATO MWCOE is committed to forging strong partnerships with a wide array of sectors, recognizing that the challenges of tomorrow require integrated solutions from a variety of disciplines. Whether through the development of new equipment, digital tools, or sustainable practices, our cooperative efforts will shape the future of mountain warfare and beyond.

The visit of Ambassador Cavagna underscored Italy’s strong support for this vision, and we are confident that, through continued collaboration, we will contribute to a more secure and adaptive military landscape.
