NATO MW COE on Visit in EMHM, Chamonix
From 18th to 20th September, the delegation of the NATO Mountain Warfare Centre of Excellence (NATO MW COE) visited the members of the Ecole Militaire de Haute Montagne (EMHM – High Mountain Training Centre) of Chamonix, France. Founded in 1932, this military Mountain School can undoubtedly be categorised as one of the oldest of these types of schools in the world.
The school provides expertise to military leaders in order for them to take autonomous decisions and master technical skills and, therefore, take advantage of mountainous and snowy areas in various operational commitments. The centre, which cannot be paralleled with any other centres in the world, is based close to two mountain ranges and four ski resorts, thus, providing training at high altitude.
The school is also well-known for its High Mountain Military Team, the Army’s expert group established in 1976, whose mission is to practice alpinism at the highest possible level.
The visit, which was conducted in a spirit of mutually beneficial cooperation, will contribute significantly to the MW COE’s efforts in gathering examples of best practices in the field of Military Mountain Education and Training.[envira-gallery id=”1557″]
